Introduction
pg. 2

A Virtual Private Server is a fully functional Internet server system. There are a few distinct differences, however, between a Virtual Private Server and other Web hosting solutions.

To function properly, all Internet servers require a computer, special software, and a high-speed connection to the Internet. A dedicated Internet server typically allows only one person (or group of people) to use the computer, software, and Internet connection. Because one person or group must purchase all the hardware and software, plus pay for the monthly expense of a high-speed Internet connection just to publish a single Internet site, dedicated servers are rather expensive.

As an alternative to dedicated Internet severs, there are two basic types of Web hosting solutions: Virtual Hosting, and Virtual Private Server technology. To fully understand just what makes your Virtual Private Server better than other Web hosting options, you need to understand the difference between these two basic types of Web hosting technologies.

RSH Web Services is not the only place out there where you can establish a Web presence. There are dozens of places where you can host your Web site. So what separates our Virtual Private Servers from the crowd? In a word: Control.

In a Virtual Hosting environment, you have almost no control over how your Internet services behave. That is because all of the software is configured by your provider, rather than by you. Virtual Hosting gives you very limited access to someone else's server. Compare that to true Virtual Private Server technology.

A Virtual Private Server gives you complete control over all your Internet services. You have your own, independent Web, FTP, and email servers and your own set of configuration files that let you control your services without any need for intervention from your provider. In essence, Virtual Private Server technology lets you be the system administrator, not somebody else in another town, state or country! Even if you don't have any experience with server administration, don't worry, we have designed your Virtual Private Server to be easy to administer. You have the freedom and flexibility to do what you want to do, so you can get the most out of what you're paying for.

RSH Web Services Virtual Private Server Systems use high-performance computers, special software, and high-speed Internet connections, just like dedicated Internet servers, but with one important difference: We've designed our systems from the ground up to allow more than one user to share the available resources. Because multiple users share the cost of these resources, the cost per user is considerably lower than a dedicated Internet server, yet you still maintain the power and flexibility that a Virtual Hosting environment simply can't provide.

Accessing Your Virtual Private Servers Services.
To access the services that your Virtual Private Server provides, you need programs called clients. There are client programs for every type of Internet service that your Virtual Private Server offers, such as Web clients (also known as Web browsers), email clients, SSH (Telnet) clients, FTP clients and so on. Client applications work with your Virtual Private Server to allow you to transfer files and information, administer your Virtual Private Server, and allow others to access information, files, and services.

In order to administer your Virtual Private Server, you need to have some type of connection to the Internet. Although your Virtual Private Server is connected to the backbone of the Internet, and is therefore online 24 hours a day, you can only access and administer it if you are connected to the Internet as well. For this reason you will need an account with a local Internet Access Provider. A simple dial-up connection is sufficient to access your Virtual Private Server remotely. Because RSH Web Services is not an Internet Access Provider, we cannot provide you with dial-up Internet access. However, there are many Internet access providers that can help you get online access. These include both national providers like AOL, AT&T, MCI, Sprint and others, as well as local providers that are available in most areas.

All the software provided by RSH Web Services is ready to run on your Virtual Private Server. Because our system is unique, some programs that are designed for dedicated machines may need small configuration changes to work properly.
